Bentle, Barbara A. (Bean) who passed away on 3/29/2016 at the age of 74

Barbara Ann (Bean) Bentle, 74, of Scarborough passed away on March 29, 2016, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a long battle with cancer. Barbara was born in Portland in 1941 and was adopted by Daniel F. and Maude M. (Richards) Bean. She graduated from Gorham High School in 1959 and received her RN degree from Maine Medical Center in 1962. Between 1964 and 1968, she served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.  Duty stations included Officer Candidate School, Newport, RI, and the U.S. Naval Hospital, San Diego, CA. After release from active duty in 1968, Barbara joined the nursing staff at Madison General Hospital, Madison, WI. When son Jeffrey and daughter Kristin were born, Barbara spent full time as a dedicated mother raising her family.  After the birth of daughter Cynthia, she joined the staff of DePaul Hospital, St. Louis, MO. In 1997, Barbara moved with her husband and Cynthia to Austria and spent 6 years living in and traveling around Europe.

In 2005, she moved back to Maine from St. Louis and spent the rest of her years in Scarborough, near the ocean.  Barbara enjoyed going on ocean cruises and attending movies and theater performances with friends and family. She doted on her five grandchildren, who called her "Oma," and enjoyed spending time with sister-in-law Katherine Bean and her family in Yarmouth.

Barbara is predeceased by Merrill Bean (brother), Olive Ramsdel (sister), Mildred Bean (sister), and birth mother, Ann Freyer.  Barbara is survived by son Jeffrey A. Bentle (Cincinnati, OH), daughter Kristin A. Handke (Dallas, TX), daughter Cynthia D. Bentle (Augusta, GA), five grandchildren, and nephew Merrill Bean, Jr. of Yarmouth.

Vising hours will be 10:00-12:00 am on May 5th, followed by Memorial Service at 12:00 pm at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, in Scarborough.
