A. Teresa Butler, Capt., USN, Ret. August 13, 1916 - October 14, 2008
Teresa Butler, Capt., USN, Ret., 92, passed away Oct. 14 in Spokane, WA.
She was born in Benicia, CA, and graduated from Dominican High in San
Rafael. She attended nursing school at St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton
and Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH. She earned both her
bachelors and masters degrees from University of California, Berkeley.
Teresa worked as a nurse at the old Vallejo General Hospital from
1940-1944. From 1944 until 1976 she served in the United States Navy, a
span covering 32 years, retiring in 1976 with the rank of captain. She
was stationed in several western states as well as in Maryland, Cuba,
Japan and aboard ship. While stationed in Maryland she established the
very successful Navy Nurse Anesthesia program. Upon retirement she moved
to San Francisco where she was active in her home owners association
and a frequent patron of the arts. She enjoyed traveling, taking trips
to Europe, Central and South America. She was widely read and well
versed in the current political situation. She was active in the Retired
Officers Club of San Francisco and served in various leadership
positions. Teresa is survived by six nephews, three nieces, 16
great-nephews and nieces and three great-great nephews and nieces. She
was preceded in death by her parents Edmund and Josie Butler; her
brother Bill Butler; and sister Lillian Burnham. Visitation will begin
at 4 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Passalacqua Funeral
Chapel, 901 West Second Street, Benicia. Mass of Christian Burial will
be held 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Dominic's Church, 475 East I Street,
Benicia followed by burial in St. Dominic's Cemetery. Arrangements are
