Darter, Mary O'dowd who passed away on 10/18/2016 at the age of 95

Mary O'Dowd Darter Navy nurse in World War II and retired school nurse in Washington Twp., 95 Mary O'Dowd Darter, 95, died on Oct. 18, 2016. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, 2 East Springtown Road, Long Valley, N.J. 07853 followed by interment in Our Lady of the Mountain Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Coughlin Funeral Home, 15 Academy St., Califon, N.J. 07830. Mary was born in Pine Brook, N.J., on April 19, 1921, the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Gearty) O'Dowd and lived in Long Valley, N.J., for most of her life. Mary graduated from Hackettstown High School in 1939 and from Mountainside Hospital Nursing School in 1942 with a nursing degree. She received a bachelor of science degree in 1955 from Seton Hall, went on to receive a master's degree in nursing from Trenton State College and then a nurse practitioner's degree from Rutgers Medical School. Mary served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1944 and after her discharge worked at Lyons VA Hospital in Lyons, N.J. She was a school nurse in Washington Township, N.J., from 1960 until her retirement. She was active in the Washington Township Historical Society, a member of the Washington Township Board of Health and was a docent at Foster Farms and active in the Long Valley VFW. Mary is survived by her daughter, Mary Midge Darter; two nephews, Scott and Patrick O'Dowd, and a sister-in-law, Joan O'Dowd. Mary was predeceased by a son, Walter Guys, and a daughter, Kathleen Darter. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
