She worked at the Salem Hospital for a short time, while she continued her post graduate courses at John Hopkins University in 1940. After her post graduate, she returned to Salem Hospital as head nurse for the Male Surgical Unit.
Dorothy was a proud member of the U.S. Navy, joining in September of 1942 and working in naval hospitals (and on naval ships) as a surgical nurse around the country including: St. Albans, NY, Chelsea, MA, San Diego, CA, and Corvaillis, OR. She also was involved with the military sea transport service and recruiting services in NY from 1953-1956. After 25 years of service, she retired from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander. Association, Cape Cod Nurses Association, Massachusetts Nurses Association, and an honorary member of the American Nurses Association.
She was proud of her Danish heritage and maintained contact by mail and visits with relatives in Denmark. Her passion for the Boston Red Sox was well known. One didn’t interrupt her when a game was being televised. She became a world traveler upon her final retirement, visiting the ports of call she saw from a transport ship during World War II.
