Edminster, Dorothea Mae who passed away on 6/19/2015 at the age of 90

Dorothea Short Edminster, age 90 formerly of Gretna died Friday, June 19, 2015 at the York Convalescent Home in Yorktown. Born July 31, 1924 in Huntington, West Virginia she was a daughter of the late Samuel Edward Short and Elsie Meade Short. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward P. Tracy after 39 years of marriage; and by Robert M. Edminster after 6 years of marriage; and three brothers, Acree Edward Short, Vester Bernard Short and Vernon Dale Short. She resided in Renan since 1972. She graduated from Gretna High School in 1942; and from the University of Virginia Nursing School in 1946 with her R.N. Degree. Then she moved to New York City where she worked at Cornell Medical Center until she entered the Navy in 1948. She was one of the original Navy flight nurses and completed flight nursing school in 1951 at Maxwell University in Maxwell, Alabama. She was a nurse on board many flights and helped airvac seriously wounded soldiers during the Korean Conflict. Mrs. Edminster retired as Lt. Commander from the US Navy in 1972 after 24 years of active duty. She had numerous duty stations during those years including Japan, Hawaii and California. She loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit many countries and drove cross country here in the U.S. twice. She was very dedicated and loving to her entire family; giving generously to her siblings, nieces and nephews. She was a past member of the Thomas Carter Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Navy Nursing Corp. Association. She was also a member of New Prospect Baptist Church, American Legion Post 232 and Order of the Eastern Star #118 Gretna Branch. She is survived by two sisters, Sammie S. Bennett of Gretna and Theresa S. DePew of Williamsburg. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Brady Willis. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Memorial Post #36 will follow in Green Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of her niece and nephew, Diane and Vernon Moon.
